Caros e caras Analistas Ambientais,
Atualmente o IBAMA e o MMA vem sofrendo o maior ataque desde suas criações, contudo, não nos deixemos abater, estamos sendo atacados não por nossos defeitos, mas por nossas qualidades. Querem nos destruir não por nossa incapacidade, mas exatamente pela nossa capacidade de dar o devido combate aos crimes ambientais que assolam nosso país, como retaliação por sermos inexoráveis com quem quer que os pratique. Essa tentativa de nos derrotar é exatamente nossa vitória, pois demostra de forma clara e precisa que atingimos o cerne da visão obtusa e anacrônica do crescimento a qualquer custo, que estamos no rumo certo pela defesa dos interesses difusos de toda a sociedade brasileira e não apenas daqueles que se locupletam com a exploração inconsequente da nossa natureza, seja através de desmatamentos ilegais, garimpos criminosos, retirada de madeira de terras indígenas, tráfico de animais silvestres e toda a sorte de condutas que visam apenas o lucro rápido e fácil.
Não somos uma “industria de multas”, somos a última linha que impede a total destruição de nossas matas, a morte de nossos animais, o óleo espalhado em nossas praias. Como disse Adlai Stevenson: “Se meus inimigos pararem de dizer mentiras a meu respeito, eu paro de dizer verdades a respeito deles.”
Em 2012, após uma investigação que durou mais de dois anos, escrevi um livro sobre uma operação que deflagramos contra o tráfico internacional de animais silvestres, que teve grande repercussão tanto no Brasil, como no exterior. Tendo isso em mente, aproveito a oportunidade e conclamo a todos que escrevam. Agora, mais do que nunca, tal necessidade se impõe. Agora, mais do que nunca, é a hora de escancararmos nossa expertise para o Brasil e para o mundo. De tirarmos nossos projetos da gaveta. Escrevam!!! Aos que fizeram mestrado e doutorado, é a hora de publicar - espero conseguir seguir esse meu próprio conselho. Aos que já tinham planos de escrever sobre a defesa do meio ambiente e nossas lutas, e sei que muitos os têm, essa é a hora. Consolidemos nossas ações! Divulguemos ainda mais nossas muitas vitórias! Não tenhamos medo de nos expor, pois somos excepcionais no que fazemos e exatamente por isso estamos sendo atacados. Mantenhamo-nos firmes, ombro a ombro nessa trincheira, pois temos uma impagável dívida de gratidão para com nossos irmãos que tombaram e pagaram com a própria vida pela defesa incondicional da Amazônia. Como recentemente disse Pepe Mujica: “a única luta que se perde é a que se abandona”.
No início, quando tomamos posse após o concurso público de 2002, quase fomos devorados pela pujança da Amazônia, pois, ainda inocentes, fomos instados a entrar de corpo e alma num combate desigual, onde não tínhamos as ferramentas mínimas para progredir. Mas, temperatura e pressão alteram as características da matéria. Resistimos e progredimos. Passamos pelo impensável. Vimos o inimaginável. Mantivemos nossa posição quando muitos se evadiram. Por muito tempo olhamos para o fundo do abismo, e, como sugerido por Nietzsche, monstros não nos tornamos, nos tornamos aço!!! Temperatura e pressão alteram as características da matéria. Somos aço!!! Fomos forjados pela dureza do bom combate, seja nas operações de fiscalização nas selvas da Amazônia, seja nos combates aos grandes acidentes ambientais, seja nos escritórios do licenciamento ambiental federal. Somos aço!!! E, como um bom aço, com força desmedida fomos dobrados e amassados milhares de vezes, passamos por muita água, passamos por muito fogo, apanhamos muito para chegarmos até aqui. As agruras nos moldaram e nos tornaram mais fortes. As intempéries nos tornaram quem somos hoje. Somos aço!!!
Correndo o risco de parecer repetitivo, mais uma vez cito Nietzche: “um político divide os seres humanos em duas classes: instrumentos e inimigos”. Não sejamos instrumentos destes que querem nos calar e nos extinguir!!! Não nos calemos. Sejamos o que já somos há anos: a última linha na defesa das nossas matas, dos nossos mares e rios, dos nossos animais!!! Sejamos a última linha da defesa dos que não tem voz e dos que sequer podem se defender!!! Se tombarmos, tombará o meio ambiente e, se este tombar, mais cedo ou mais tarde, todos tombaremos!!! Filhos, netos, bisnetos. Nada restará às futuras gerações, que não os desertos, os lixões e a certeza de um futuro cruel e inóspito.
Pela defesa de todos os nossos bens ambientais, não podemos nos dar ao luxo de recuar!!!
E, pela memória dos que tombaram, eles não passarão!!!
Embora seja o “Dia dos Mortos”, em homenagem aos nossos irmãos que se foram, hoje o nosso luto se transmutou em verbo!!!

Presently, IBAMA and MMA are suffering the greatest volume of attacks since their creation; however, we cannot let us to be shaken, for we are being attacked not for our faults, but for our qualities. They want to destroy us not because of our incapacity, but exactly for our ability to fight environmental crimes that plague our country, as a retaliation for being inexorable to whomever practices them. This attempt to defeat us is really our victory, as it clearly demonstrate that we have affected by the obtuse and anachronistic vision of growth of any cost, that we are on the right track to defend the diffuse interests of all Brazilian society, and not only of those who enrich themselves over the inconsequent exploitation of our nature, whether through illegal deforestation, criminal mines, the extraction of timber from indigenous lands, the trafficking of wild animals and all sorts of conduits aimed at only quick and easy profit..
We are not an “industry of fines”, we are the last line that prevents the total destruction of our forests, the death of our animals, the oil scattered on our beaches. As Adlai Stevenson said, “If my enemies stop telling lies about me, I stop telling them truths about them."
In 2012, after an investigation that lasted more than two years, I wrote a book about an operation that we deflagrate against the international traffic of wild animals, which had great repercussion in Brazil, as well as worldwide. With that in mind, I seize the opportunity and call everyone to write. Now, more than ever, such need demands. Now, more than ever, it is time to use our expertise for Brazil and the world. Let's get your projects out of the chest. Write!!! Those who are masters and doctors, is time to publish - the hope I can follow my own advice. To those who already had plans to write about environmental protection and our struggles, and I know that many have them, now is the time. Let's fortify our actions! Let us spread further our many victories! Do not fear to expose ourselves, for we are exceptional in what we do and that is exactly why we are being attacked. Let us stand firmly, shoulder to shoulder in this trench, for we have an priceless debt of gratitude to our brethren who have fallen and paid with their lives for the unconditional defense of the Amazon. As Pepe Mujica said: “The only fight that is lost, is that which is abandoned".
In the beginning, when we were sworn in, after the public tender of 2002, we were almost devoured by the Amazon's might, for, still innocent, we were urged to enter body and soul in an unequal fight where we did not have the minimum tools to progress. But temperature and pressure change the characteristics of matter. We have resisted and progressed. We went through the unthinkable. We saw the unimaginable. We held our position when many fled. For a long time we looked at the bottom of the abyss, and, as suggested by Nietzsche, monsters we did not became, we become steel!!! Temperature and pressure change the characteristics of matter. We are steel!!! We were forged by the toughness of the good fight, be it in the operations of inspection in the jungles of the Amazon, in the combats to the great environmental accidents, or in the offices of the federal environmental licensing. We are steel!!! And, like good steel, under excessive force we were folded and kneaded a thousand times, we went through a lot of water, we went through a lot of fire, we took a lot to get here. The hardships shaped us and made us stronger. The difficulties have made us who we are today. We are steel !!!
At the risk of appearing repetitive, I again quote Nietzche: "A politician divides humans into two classes: instruments and enemies." Let us not be instruments of those who want to silence and extinguish us!!! Let's not shut up. Let's be what we have been for years: the last line of defense of our forests, our seas and rivers, our animals!!! Let us be the last line of defense of those who have no voice and of those who cannot defend themselves!!! If we fall, the environment will fall and, if it falls, sooner or later we will all fall! Children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren. Nothing will remain for the future generations, other than the deserts, the dumps and the certainty of a cruel and inhospitable future.
For the defense of all our environmental assets, we cannot afford to retreat!!!
